“There were a few key turning points in this project, and one of the most important was when you entered the picture. Not just because you were one of the first people to read a whole draft (and you noticed things in your reading that helped me make the next draft better), but because you confidently answered my question: "Is this pile of essays a book?" I don't think I'd have been able to muster the momentum to keep going without knowing that someone outside my own head could see the potential for this collection. Thank you!”

-Mary Laura Philpott, author of PENGUINS WITH PEOPLE PROBLEMS (Penguin Random House, 2015) and forthcoming memoir-in-essays, I MISS YOU WHEN I BLINK, Simon & Schuster/Touchstone, April 2019

Molly Schulman quite simply resurrected my long-suffering novel, LETTERS TO CELIA. Her notes were invaluable and her ear for the music of the narrative was important; yes, of course, but above all what Ms. Shulman did was acutely recognize its arcs and its characters and the aim of its author beyond even my scope. Her notes – detailed, penetrating, cajoling and fearless – provided me not only solid footing for where the work would or might go but sparked, for me, a re-imagining of it. I needed a veteran editor to review the unfinished manuscript because I was truly unsure of how much time and energy a working non-fiction writer should spend on a pet project that he still wished to see realized, but I chose Molly because I knew, as a writer herself, and to be honest, a woman writer, she would be able to reveal to me the motivations of my lovelorn characters during a time and place she instinctively understood. She brought not only her considerable talent but her indomitable spirit to the project. I would like to think she was preternaturally prepared to respond to my book and, to say the very least, she did not disappoint. Ultimately, as an editor and a writer, her greatest gift to my book was her unique perspective.
— James Campion, author of seven published books, most recently ACCIDENTALLY LIKE A MARTYR: The Tortured Art of Warren Zevon, published by Backbeat Books

It was my great luck to have you as my editor. You were clear, encouraging and incredibly intuitive. Best of all, you understood what I was trying to do with my book but had not quite managed— and gave me the exact feedback I needed to make it work. This combination of big-picture understanding and an eagle eye for detail not only helped get my manuscript in shape for querying, it helped me understand the book as a whole entity for the first time. A novel is a vast thing to wrangle—especially for a first-time novelist. After working with you, I really understood what my story was about—which translated directly into finding an agent and publisher! I am forever grateful.
— Michelle Ruiz Keil, author of forthcoming debut novel, ALL OF US WITH WINGS, Soho Press, June 2019

A good editor spots what isn’t working, a better editor spots what is working, a great editor (MOLLY SCHULMAN) goes beyond both and recognizes a work’s vision, embraces it, and shepherds it toward richer creativity and deeper insight. My novel and I have benefited enormously from Molly’s smart, kind tutelage!
— Mary Clyde, winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction

Your detailed comments about theme, character voice and so much more allowed me to push the writing into new territory. Most importantly, you recognized a sense of purpose I had not fully grasped in the novel.
— Jerry Sticker, author of forthcoming novel, THE AMERICAN ROAD

To say that Molly Schulman is a smart and incisive editor doesn’t give credence to her uber intelligence and the way she penetrates a story to get it to the best it can be. To say that Molly shepherds an author fails to appreciate her role as indefatigable supporter and analyst. Molly is a gift for whom I will be forever grateful.
— Dennis Steinman, author of forthcoming novel, GOD'S SIGH

After I read your editorial letter, all I could think was how LUCKY I was. I am blown away by [your] amazingly clear, concise, acutely intelligent and detailed [feedback]. It was as if you had mind-melded to my creative process, so reading your comments and critiques was almost like me discovering the issues on my own after days of intense brainstorming. Also, the way you would give examples to illustrate what is and isn’t working was invaluable. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. That you were the right editor for this book is a severe understatement. Every day, I thank the universe for finding you.
— Susan Josephs, playwright and author of forthcoming novel, ACCIDENTAL FRIENDS
